Shiv with The Feel Better Way presents: Know Your Salad
On June 30, 2018, Shiv with The Feel Better Way gave a wonderful workshop and handed out workbooks titled Know Your Salad at the Art Ark Apartments in San Jose, California. Art Ark Apartments is a unique community with a smaller population than most of the San Jose communities and has a higher percentage of families with children per unit, making it an ideal community to engage and educate on healthy eating habits.
The workbook contained useful information about the “Dirty Dozen”, foods that contain the most pesticide residue and therefore are better if organic, and the Clean Fifteen which are fruits and vegetables that are less susceptible to pesticides and do not need to be purchased organically. She also covered types of oils, which are healthiest to consume without heat and which are best to cook with. The emphasis of these lists were to educate people on affordable options and to empower them to make healthier decisions on an everyday level. Three recipes were also included.
Shiv gave a dynamic presentation and led a lively discussion in which she answered all the questions of the audience. She then made three simple, healthy salad entrees and walked the participants through the process step-by-step. At the end of the presentation everyone was able to enjoy a lovely mixed green salad with a “Not So Basic Lemon Vinaigrette”, “Gluten Free Noodles with a Peanut Dressing” and a “Kale Cabbage Coleslaw with Spicy Thai Dressing”.
After the event the workbook as well as the countless online resources and YouTube link went out to all the residents at Art Ark Apartments who were unable to attend the workshop. Many of the residents have said they have been eating more salad lately, and even their kids love it!
